As the Christmas holidays end here in Austria, the weather is set to become increasingly sunny but bitterly cold in the coming week.
Weather Vienna
At the start of the new week, it will still be cloudy and snowy in some areas. According to the forecast by Geosphere Austria (formerly ZAMG), the weather will gradually clear up a little. The sun will be visible sometimes, especially in the west and southwest.
The danger of snow drifts
The wind will be weak to moderate on Monday, brisk to strong, and icy cold from the northwest to northeast in the east and southeast. Snow drifts are at risk, especially in exposed locations in the east. Temperatures will range from minus nine to minus one degree in the morning and mostly from minus six to plus two degrees in the afternoon. The positive temperatures will be particularly noticeable in the south.
On Tuesday, some clouds will feel themselves in the country, and there will also be a few snowflakes occasionally. Otherwise, however, sunshine will predominate. Only at the beginning of the day will there be some residual clouds along the northern side of the Alps. The wind will be weak to moderately brisk on the eastern edge of the Alps until early morning. Early morning temperatures will be between minus 15 and four degrees, even lower in the Waldviertel and Mühlviertel regions and some Alpine valleys. Afternoon temperatures will range between minus nine and zero degrees.
New week brings sunny weather
The middle of the week will bring bright, sunny weather thanks to the influence of high pressure. According to the Geosphere forecast, the sky will be cloudless in most regions of Austria. Only in the west and southwest will there be a few patches of high fog at first, but these will also clear during the day. The wind will be mostly light, with only moderate easterly winds in the Danube region. The thermometer will show between minus 18 and minus six degrees in the morning. During the day, it will only climb to minus five to plus two degrees.
On Thursday, the high-pressure influence will continue the bright, sunny, and cold weather. There will only be some fog in the western valleys and around Lake Constance. During the day, the sky will be cloudless in most regions. Only the northeast may be touched by a few harmless, often thin patches of cloud in the afternoon. The wind will be light. Early temperatures will be between minus 18 and minus five degrees, with daytime highs between minus three and plus five degrees. The warmest temperatures will still be at medium altitudes in the west.
As the working week draws close, it will remain bright and sunny on Friday. However, eastern Austria will again be exposed to colder air masses at the edge of the high, however, and low, fog-like clouds will move in from the northeast. It may even snow a little in places. In the east and on the eastern edge of the Alps, there will be moderate to brisk north-westerly to northerly winds. Otherwise, the wind will remain weak. Temperatures between minus 15 and minus two degrees are expected in the morning and minus three to plus three degrees during the day.
